Weathervane glass balls come in wonderful colours and shapes. These globes are especially created to adorn weathervanes in place of the copper globes. They are hand-blown into specially made cast iron moulds with the open ends capped with special copper or brass collars. The weathervane glass balls will endure decades upon decades of use without any kind of maintenance. Classic weathervane glass balls are smooth and round. They have been the most common and affordable balls throughout history with their roots planted firmly in early Lightning Rod use. Several transparent and opaque colours are available. From about 1850 to early in the twentieth century, salesmen travelled the country in search of homes, farms, and businesses to sell and install a lightning protection system. They were well equipped and suited to the task of moving their product. They were outfitted with slick samples cases showcasing the rods, couplings and cable. They would also carry examples of all the wonderful options that were available to dress up their system. The attractive dressings included ornamental and decorative weathervane glass balls and arrows.
